About Brehme, the artist

Since Susan Brehme Park was a child of 6-years old, she has painted and created fine art. In 1976 at the age of 10, she won a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Reynolda Gardens summer art program in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1986, she was accepted to the free Governor's School of North Carolina art program in Laurenburg where she won the t-shirt design and had her creation printed on the official school t-shirt. In high school, she took college level art classes and won numerous awards, including a national gold key award for a linoleum cut print of a cityscape.

Brehme graduated from North Carolina State University in 1988 with a degree in Design in Architecture. In 1989, Brehme joined the Wake Visual Artist's Association in Raleigh, NC. To hide the fact that she was a woman from a male-dominated art scene, she began signing her works simply as "Brehme." She continues this practice today, both with her art work and photography.

She worked in architecture briefly before switching to work in graphic design. In 1992, she began working for the Raleigh News and Observer as an ad designer. She moved to Seattle in 1994 and began working for the Seattle Times as a composer/printer, where she designed ads and helped with page layout.

Shortly after arriving in Washington State, she quickly landed two Seattle art shows in the spring of 1996. Unfortunately, all of her large pieces were stolen from her last show at Neko's. This left her bitter and she chose to not show and instead concentrate on painting pieces to donate to auctions and paint small pieces on hand painted on cards to give to friends.

In the summer of 1996, she married Kenneth Clayton Park. As a thank you gift to all of the friends and family members who attended the North Carolina wedding, she hand-painted original cards. She was surprised to later visit family members and find that some had framed the cards.

In 1997, she quit her job at the Seattle Times to operate her own newspaper, the Seattle Sun. As an added service, she provided freelance graphic designer for some of her customers, primarily festivals where she designed programs and posters.

After selling the newspaper in 2005, Brehme began teaching art to students at the elementary school level while continuing to work as a freelance graphic designer. She joined the Arts West Art Association in West Seattle, showed works at area businesses and galleries, and sold her handpainted cards at Atlantis Designs in Burien.

In the summer of 2007, Brehme relocated to Florida where she has been working on a line of handpainted cards she hopes to market to retail outlets.

She currently works for several non-profits in Central Florida.
